Hill Country Contemporary

Challenge

We were asked to design the Neiman Marcus store for The Shops at La Cantera in San Antonio, a single-level, open-air, upscale mall with a garden theme that includes water elements. The mall’s overall architecture and ambiance are influenced throughout by the hill country that defines Central Texas.

SOLUTION

This 122,000-square-foot Neiman Marcus is an anchor store at San Antonio’s distinctive high-end mall. The design has an open, spacious plan with a contemporary atmosphere.

To call to mind local Texas history and architecture, we used distinctive elements such as indigenous stone flooring, mosaics, and other bold surfaces and textures. Hand-applied tinted Venetian plasters added color accents. We employed a singular design vocabulary throughout, with focal points of fine art, highly effective lighting, carefully chosen materials, and close attention to detail.
